For me, one of the best parts about Christmas is getting to decorate my Christmas tree. I wanted to incorporate food into a Christmas tree. After spending hours on Pinterest, I found was Christmas tree cupcakes.
These cupcakes are probably the easiest things I made for Christmas. They are green velvet cupcakes with a simple buttercream frosting. I used my red velvet cupcakes recipe and simply used green food coloring rather than red. I made a vanilla buttercream, using three parts icing sugar and one part unsalted butter. Once you whip it together, add a few drops of vanilla essence to it.
Before you start icing your cupcakes, you want to make sure that the cupcakes have cooled properly or else the icing will melt.
I added some green food coloring to the buttercream so that it somewhat matches the shade of my cupcakes.
Fix a piping bag with a large star nozzle, and start piping in an inward motion, layering the buttercream so that there is a bit of height. You may not want to follow my pictures exactly. With the heat in Bombay, everything kept falling flat so I gave up.
Let the cupcakes chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes so that the icing sets a little and then you can move onto the decorating.
Since we want the cupcakes to look like a Christmas tree, start by placing a small star right on top at the tip of the icing. I used quite small ones, so handling them became a little difficult. I suggest using tweezers or forceps for this step, its a lot easier that way.
Next, you want to take some sprinkles and very gently drop them on the cupcake. Make sure you add the sprinkles slowly and in somewhat of a pattern so that they look like ornaments on a tree.
It honestly doesn’t matter the kind of sprinkles you use. I used colorful ones and pearly white ones.
Some of them looked a little bland for my taste, so I even added a bit of edible gold glitter which sparkles in just the right light.
